The mushroom expert recommends his favourite bistro, two great London institutions and his local farmers’ market

EATING OUT

La Poule au Pot

231 Ebury St, Belgravia, London SW1W 8UT; www.pouleaupot.co.uk
The first name on Roger’s lips when asked out where he eats out is this: a classic timewarp of a French bistro tucked away in Belgravia: “It’s very nice, it’s been there for a long time.” (Since 1962, to be exact.)

J Sheekey

28-32 St Martin’s Ct, London WC2N 4AL; https://www.j-sheekey.co.uk
This Covent Garden institution, serving classic British dishes with an emphasis on seafood, is another regular haunt.

Rules

34-35 Maiden Ln, London WC2E 7LB; www.rules.co.uk
“Somewhere I have never been, but I am going to with a friend soon is Rules. I think it is one of the oldest British restaurants.” In fact, it is the oldest in London, dating back to 1798.

BUYING IN

Pimlico Road Farmers’ Market

Pimlico Rd, Belgravia, London SW1W 8UT; Saturdays 9:00 – 13:00
“We are anti-supermarkets,” says Roger. “We go to a little Saturday farmer’s market just off Sloane Square and we try to get enough stuff to last all week.”
