Mitch Tonks’ Devon & Dorset Address Book

14th June 2018

Interview: Letitia Clark

The chef and food writer picks a stunningly located oyster restaurant, “the most fantastic” curry house and a “great, if grumpy” butcher

EATING OUT

Hix at Lyme Regis (pictured above)

Cobb Rd, Lyme Regis DT7 3JP; www.hixrestaurants.co.uk
“Great for a good bottle of wine and some oysters in a stunning location, and not too far from us.”

Outlaw’s Fish Kitchen

1 Middle St, Port Isaac PL29 3RH; www.nathan-outlaw.com
“Always a great place to eat fish. Nathan uses lots of the same suppliers/ingredients as us and his cooking is exceptional.”

Wild Artichokes

1, Centurion Works, Lower Union Rd, Kingsbridge TQ7 1EF; www.wildartichokes.co.uk
“Jane Baxter is a brilliant cook. She has set up the sort of ideal scenario here. This is situated in the most unlikely location on an industrial estate in Kingsbridge. It’s mostly a private catering space (she does lots of events) but she normally opens for a few meals a week, maybe a Sunday lunch or a Friday dinner. I love it.”

East in the West

75 Torquay Rd, Paignton TQ3 2SE; www.eastinthewest.uk.com
“Great name, great food, dodgy décor. This is the most fantastic curry house. I get my cravings and I always go here. They never change the menu and it never disappoints. It’s mostly Keralan dishes.”

BUYING IN

Country Cheeses

1 Ticklemore St, Totnes TQ9 5EJ; www.countrycheeses.co.uk
“This is a brilliant cheese shop. The ladies in there are so passionate, friendly and helpful. There’s no bullshit, just good cheese. This shop has sort of reawakened my appreciation of English cheese, as I’ve always loved European cheeses more.”

McCabe Butchers

5-7 Fore St, Totnes TQ9 5DA; www.mccabesbutchers.co.uk
“Christopher McCabe is a great butcher, if a little grumpy. He’s become relatively famous after making national news when he locked himself in his meat fridge and had to battle his way out with a frozen blood sausage. His meat in top notch.”

Annies

Ticklemore St, Totnes TQ9 5EJ; 01803 867265
“We really struggle with good vegetables here, but this is a better alternative to the supermarkets.”
